The processing of requests for rezoning, special use permits, and major development plans are significant opportunities for the Town to plan for growth that meets community-based goals and policies.

The process for review and approval of zoning and development applications is set by our adopted Land Development Ordinance in accordance with state statute. The process centers around public notification, public meetings and hearings, staff availability for questions, and compliance with the Town of Elon Future Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

The Planning Department works closely with other Town staff, state and county regulatory agencies, and major stakeholders in the community to review proposed plans. It is a collaborative process that takes input from experts in housing, economic development, transportation, utilities and community facilities, parks and recreation, and environmental protection.

Additional information and clarification are available through the Planning Office by calling Town Hall, emailing jpeterson@elon.gov, or making an appointment to visit us in our offices at 104 S. Williamson Avenue.
