Social Media Comments Policy

The Town of Elon (hereafter “Town”) uses social media to interact with our residents, businesses, and visitors about important public issues. We want to hear from you via the town’s official social media sites.

We encourage you to submit your questions, comments, and concerns, but please note that these are moderated, online discussion sites and not a public forum. All content posted to the town’s social media sites by the public should be related to discussion of town-sponsored programs, services, projects, issues, events and activities.  Content on these sites are subject to N.C. Public Records Laws and e-discovery laws and policies.

The Town reserves the right to delete submissions that:

  • Include profane or obscene language or content;
  • Include content that promotes, fosters, or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race, creed,
    color, age, religion, gender, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation;
  • Constitute spam or include unrelated links to other sites;
  • Are not topically related to town-sponsored programs, services, projects, issues, events and activities, or the particular post being commented upon;
  • Advocate illegal activity;
  • Promote particular services, products, or political organizations;
  • Infringe on copyrights or trademarks;
  • Violate any local, state, or federal laws and/or is otherwise unlawful.

The list is not intended to be all-inclusive.

This comment policy is subject to amendment or modification at any time. Any violation of the Social Media Comment Policy may result in the offending user being banned from use of town social media sites at any time and without prior notice.

While the Town understands that social media is a 24 hour-a-day, 7 days-a-week medium, the monitoring capability of the town’s staff is not. The Town therefore asks that no requests for emergency service or immediate response be made through social media.

The social media sites are not forums for submitting public comment. If you would like to comment on town-proposed projects, plans, policies, and programs, please visit the town web site home page and use the “contact us” link to submit your comments online, or attend any of the public hearings or open comment meetings that are held. There is also contact information on this web site for town departments and employees. If you have a concern, we want to help.

Please note that the comments expressed on social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) by others do not reflect the opinions and position of town officers or employees. Any non-town links you may see here do not constitute endorsement by the Town.
