Downtown Development is a department within the Town of Elon that focuses on growth, development, and sustainability of the downtown commercial district. The department staff works hand in hand with the Downtown Advisory Board and volunteers to achieve the goals of the annual work plans, provide business retention services, and work with entrepreneurs and investors interested in locating in Downtown Elon.

Following the Four Points™ system of Main Street America, there are four committees supporting this effort:

  • Organization involves creating a strong foundation for a sustainable revitalization effort, including cultivating partnerships, community involvement, and resources for the district.
  • Design supports a community’s transformation by enhancing the physical and visual assets that set the commercial district apart.
  • Promotion positions the downtown or commercial district as the center of the community and hub of economic activity, while creating a positive image that showcases a community’s unique characteristics.
  • Economic Vitality focuses on capital, incentives, and other economic and financial tools to assist new and existing businesses, catalyze property development, and create a supportive environment for entrepreneurs and innovators that drive local economies.

We are always looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our efforts. Interested in volunteering for any of the committees, let us know.

Our vision: Downtown Elon is powered by a diverse community of families, professionals, students and retirees. It serves as the center of life-long learning and creative activities for Alamance County, that is enhanced by the energy of Elon University, locally owned restaurants and shops, and a collection of visual art.

Our mission is to optimize downtown opportunities and lead the efforts in and beautification of the downtown district.

Join us and explore Downtown Elon. Your destination for good food, good shops, and good times.
