SOCIAL DISTRICT NOW IN DOWNTOWN ELON
Enjoy a connected space, both indoors and outside, for you and your family, friends, and colleagues to carry your beer or wine that you purchase from a participating business within the Social District. With each purchased drink, you’ll receive an official Social District container that confirms the location and date your beverage. You’ll then be permitted to travel freely within the district, whether in participating establishments, along the sidewalks or seating areas. The district extends from the corner of W. Lebanon Avenue and N. Holt Avenue to S. Williamson Avenue, and ends in a spacious congregating area on S. Williamson and W. College Avenue. For detailed information click here

First Mural in downtown Elon
The Town of Elon is proud to have our first murals in downtown! Both of these murals were painted by artist, Mary E Ryan. She is a seasoned artist who has been painting most of her life. She has a love of painting these outdoor murals. The first mural was done just prior to students arriving for the new school year 2022. The cross walk on Holt Ave next to Magerks is now a colorful abstract piece with a sun in the center. The second mural was completed in September 2022 and is located in the outdoor dining area on W. Lebanon Ave. The large colorful oak leaves created a beautiful back drop and are a part of the beauty of Elon with its huge Oak Trees. The Art Advisory Board, Downtown Advisory Board and Town Council have been anxious for public art the past few years.
Downtown Elon
Put down roots in Downtown Elon!
The Town of Elon is proud of its downtown and the bustling shops and restaurants that make Downtown Elon their home. With a focus on increasing the activity in downtown, the Town of Elon began a journey to becoming a Main Street Community and achieved that goal in July 2018. Every year shows an increase in new events for the entire family.
Downtown Elon started in the early 1890s with the construction of our first commercial building. The general store served the surrounding communities from its prominent location at the crossroads beside the railroad tracks. Downtown Elon has grown since then to include a wide variety of restaurants, retail shops, salons, and more.
Our vision: Downtown Elon is powered by a diverse community of families, professionals, students, and retirees. It serves as the center of life-long learning and creative activities for Alamance County, that is enhanced by the energy of Elon University, locally-owned restaurants and shops, and a collection of visual art.
Our mission is to optimize downtown opportunities and lead the efforts in and beautification of the downtown district.
About the Organization
The Town of Elon is dedicated to promoting downtown and offering support to existing and potential business and property owners. The Town designated an 8 block area as the downtown development area in the 2014 Downtown Master Plan. The Town of Elon became apart of the Main Street Community in 2019.
Downtown Development is a department within the Town of Elon that focuses on growth, development, and sustainability of the downtown commercial district. The department staff works hand in hand with the Downtown Board and volunteers to achieve the goals of the annual work plans, provide business retention services, and work with entrepreneurs and investors interested in locating in Downtown Elon. We are always looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our efforts. Downtown Elon Inc. was established in 2021 as a 501c3 for downtown to create more opportunities for fundraising and grant opportunities within North Carolina for downtown growth and development.
